Resourcefulness In Action!

Hi There,

I’ve been known to leave my news consumption in Brian Lehrer’s hands. Fair, compassionate and super-sharp, Brian is second to none in the journalism department. I’ve often daydreamed of becoming a phone caller during his show, adding my two cents about a topic. And this past Sunday, during a special broadcast, I had my chance!

I’d prepared a spiffy and concise statement tying into DRIVEN’s exploration of Clarity and Gratitude, and I made sure it didn’t start with the cliché, “Long-time listener, first-time caller”. My heart raced as I unexpectedly got right through to the call screener. But before I was patched into the discussion, the topic took a sudden turn to Racial Justice. This meant my rehearsed message was no longer relevant to the segment. Time to switch gears, fast!

As a (proud) introvert, I don’t usually think so quickly on my feet. If I didn’t compose some new thoughts on-the-spot, I would surely fumble and sound foolish. I considered hanging up, but instead decided to do what I encourage my coaching clients to do: Stretch outside the comfort zone! It was time to have confidence in what I DO know, while practicing vulnerability and authenticity. And after all, Racial Justice intersects with one of my specialties: DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion).

“Deborah from Putnam Valley, you’re on WNYC.” I hit the ground running. When it was over, my inner critic began tearing my performance apart. “I’d sounded uninformed. I didn’t make any sense. What an embarrassment!”

But slyly, and thankfully, Michael was recording the live broadcast on an old-fashioned cassette deck in the next room. I could listen to an instant replay of the call! And as it turns out, my inner critic got it all wrong. Listen to the upload HERE, and consider joining me in 2021 to explore the part we can all play in Racial Justice, DEI, and personal resourcefulness on-the-fly. See you in the New Year!

Cheers!
-Deborah
